Derived from the leaf of the plant, Green tea contains substances
calledpolyphenols, which scientists think contribute to its
anti-cancer activity. Laboratory studies of one polyphenol,
catechin epigallocatechin-3-gallate (EGCG), show that it may
interfere with several of the processes involved in cell
replication. Catechins are antioxidants with the ability to
scavenge reactive Oxygen species such as superoxide and hydroxyl
and peroxyl radicals. Catechins have a thermogenic (fat burning)
effect in the body. Catechins can boost the effectiveness of
enzymatic phase II detoxification. Catechins appear to help
maintain healthy cell colonies.
